Employee Monitoring: Blunting the Double-Edged Sword


As we all know, workplace monitoring has become a norm. A large number of organizations all over the world are using different solutions like Mobistealth to keep tabs on their employees. This of course is borderline invasion of privacy at the least, which of course doesn’t sit well with the employees. On the other hand, employers believe that uses of digital monitoring tools are a necessity because without supervising workplace equipment and gadgets, employees would waste most of their time and won’t focus on the assigned tasks. Installing monitoring solution at workplace has always been a problematic matter because there are some concerns from the employees’ point of view, and some from the employers’ side.

Employees’ Reservations

Everyone wants their privacy, but more often than not, employees have to comply with whatever rules are applied at the workplace. However, sometimes, the employees don’t feel that it is necessary for the employers to keep an eye on them 24/7 just because they’re on their payroll. Another reason why employees are dissatisfied with the monitoring solutions is because they believe their personal information isn’t safe. When they use the office-given smartphones or laptops, they sign into different platforms, talk to their loved ones, receive all sorts of calls, etc. The employees think that all of this information is stored and then is available for everyone to see. They need assurance that whatever they’re doing or whatever they’re sharing will stay safe. Employers unfortunately are less than willing to guarantee anything of the sort, thus causing discomfort and unrest amongst the employees.

Employers’ Concerns

Employers believe that employees waste a large chunk of their office time on different social networking platforms, and by talking to their friends. Due to this reason, employers want to deploy monitoring solution so that they can see whatever’s happening on their employees’ computer. If they see someone slacking off, they can then intervene and penalize that individual in a timely and safe manner. Employers have sacrificed a lot in order to build up their company’s reputation and don’t want someone to hurt its performance. Organization’s performance and its position in the market is of a great value to them and they aren’t ready to show any leniency when it’s at stake.


Both parties are unhappy because of their different perspectives and both have legitimate reasons to act that way. However, in order for everyone to prosper, they have to come to an agreement. Employees don’t like being monitored 24/7, so employers should make sure that the monitoring tool is only active during work hours. As soon as they leave workplace premises at day end, they should be free to do and say whatever they want without anyone watching them. Furthermore, employers should provide assurance to the employees that all of the information gained through monitoring solutions is for them alone to see and no one else will be laying eyes on them.

On the other hand, employees have to be cooperative with the employers. If they have installed a monitoring tool at the office, then it is their choice and it should not hinder employees’ performance at all. They are paid to work so they should spend time on that instead of being paranoid about something that may or may not happen. They can take a few breaks every now and then, but when they start to slack off too much and completely ignore the work assigned, then they are practically forcing employers to take action against them. If both sides remain reasonable in their demands and actions, then this double-edged sword will not be able to do any damage to any of the involved parties.
